“For behold! The storm comes, and now all friends should gather together, lest each singly be destroyed.” - Gandalf, Two Towers
The Walk to Mordor Remember when that Hobbit destroyed the ring in the fires of Mordor?
Mordor represents the looming darkness in the world. There is a rising concern that youth are facing darkness more than ever. YFC fights against darkness for youth today such as depression, anxiety, lack of self confidence, isolation, even temptations in life. This is an event to journey together against darkness to make a difference for our youth. The Walk To Mordor is a covid safe event for you to do on your own time and in your own way. Participants join to walk, run, or bike the distance from Hobbiton to Mordor and help us raise funds to support Graphic Word to aid youth. Our goal is to collaboratively reach 2863km, raise $10,000, with a fellowship of 50 heroes in one month. Register to join the Walk To Mordor for this epic journey to defeat darkness. Come celebrate the end of Walk to Mordor at SECOND BREAKFAST:

Q&eh? (click on the question below to read the answer)
How is it possible to accomplish such a big goal?
Regarding DISTANCE, this is only possible TOGETHER. Since this event takes place during the entire month of October we will all do a little each day. We calculate that each participant will only need 20 days for our shared goal of 2863km (see chart):
PARTICIPANTS |
DAILY DISTANCE |
DAILY GROUP TOTAL |
20 DAY GROUP TOTAL |
20 DAY INDIVIDUAL TOTAL |
25 walkers |
2km |
50km |
1000km |
40km |
15 runners |
3km |
45km |
900km |
60km |
10 bikers |
5km |
50km |
1000km |
100km |
TOTAL 50 |
145km |
2900km |
Note: We will share the load like the fellowship in Lord of the Rings. Our goal is to have 50 total people register. Plus, if each participant asks 1 or 2 others to help them accomplish their distance, the distance per participant much less. Therefore this is possible TOGETHER!
Regarding DARKNESS (aka. Mordor), the answer is the same. Youth need more than just a few youth workers to overcome their difficulties, it takes a village. There is no chart to mark how many and how far, but if each adult was to intentionally shine the Light to teens, then youth culture would likely not be facing the darkness of anxiety, suicide, depression and loneliness.

WHY the lORD OF THE RINGS theme?
Lord of the Rings (LOTR) by J.R.R. Tolkien is a well known tale of an unlikely fellowship of heroes defeating an incredible darkness. We are using this theme because:
1) it is fun popular culture that makes many people smile and identify with characters
(2) it was written as a parallel for human struggles to find hope using the theme of light and darkness
(3) its fits perfectly with Graphic Word which is a ministry to nerdy teenagers
(4) the Walk to Mordor takes place during the month of October, so the final day can be a LOTR costume theme (see example)

HOW does the fundraising work?
This is possible TOGETHER. This event is a simple fundraiser much like other Walk/Run/Bike events. The idea is that each participant will ask friends, family, neighbours or coworkers to sponsor them to accomplish the distance. If 50 participants each raise $200 then the total achieved is $10,000.

The funds raise all support YFC program called Graphic Word, which is a relatively new program that is developing sustainable funding. Graphic Word works specifically with nerdy youth by engaging them through games, comics and movie themes. Each youth is encouraged with positive messages and "Level Up" challenges to grow and develop their own character and faith.
